Both arms had the same total value: the twice-monthly arm was paid on the 7th and 21st of each month and the quarterly arm a lump sum at the start of each quarter, so amounts are coded as monthly equivalents. Paid by prepaid debit card, direct deposit, PayPal, or Venmo; benefits protected by waivers and a hold-harmless fund. Everyone was paid $50 per completed survey, with extra follow-up and timeliness bonuses aimed especially at controls. Endline response was 51% (1,074: 374 treated, 700 control). Randomization ran in enrollment waves with different treatment shares, and the analysis is weighted; 253 participants were erroneously re-randomized in the second wave; 102 households paid from the program's start in December 2020-January 2021 are excluded; 38 households had more than one recipient. The Summer 2023 follow-up (942 respondents) asked retrospectively about changes since March 2021 (Table A14); its months are computed from dates. "notes": "Both arms got a Spero Financial credit-union account (savings and checking with a debit card) into which their monthly deposits went; controls got $10 a month as an honorarium. Benefits were deliberately not protected; participants were told benefits could fall. 100 recruited, 7 could not be located, 93 randomized. First deposit August 25, 2023; quarter 0 (Q3 2023) is the baseline though it includes about one month of transfers; quarter months follow the paper (quarter 2 = six months, quarter 5 = fifteen months). Administrative data linked by the South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office; ER admissions, SNAP/TANF, and card spending also analyzed. Phone interviews reached 42 of 93 (20 treatment, 22 control). An earlier registration (AEARCTR-0008509, 2021) planned this design (40 vs 60, $200 vs $10, from 2022) and listed mental health among baseline survey topics, but no mental health results are reported."

  "result_reports": ["registered:NCT05408884_1", "registered:NCT05408884_3"],
  "notes": "Two-stage randomization: 760 participants were randomized to Miracle Friends (523) or a waitlist (237), and 256 of the Miracle Friends group were also assigned $750 a month for a year (the Miracle Friends-only count, 267, is derived). The cash was disclosed only after an assigned participant began Miracle Friends, so only 103 received it; no ongoing conditions are described and the reports call it unconditional. T111-1 isolates the cash (both arms had phone buddies); T111-2 compares cash plus phone buddy with the waitlist, which the reports emphasize. The final report compares completers who received an intervention (Miracle Money n=88, Miracle Friends n=40, waitlist n=107), not everyone randomized. All arms were paid $30 per survey (baseline and five quarterly surveys). Survey months are from baseline; payments began once participants engaged with Miracle Friends, soon after baseline (the 6-month interim comparison used recipients with at least six payments). The reports give employment at 'follow-up' at the end of the study, coded here as the 15-month survey. The interim report (6 months) presents only unsheltered status and unmet basic needs (Miracle Money n=69 vs waitlist n=86), so registered:NCT05408884_2 holds no mental health or employment results. Loneliness (UCLA 3-item) and substance use are also reported. Years run from recruitment start to the planned end of data collection; payments ran in 2022-2024. The Trials 2024 protocol and a forthcoming Social Work Research article are not among the files."
