# Screening codebook

You are screening search results for a review of randomized trials of **unconditional cash given to people in high-income countries**, and its effects on their **mental health** and **work**. Decide each item from what it shows you (title and abstract for a report; the registration's fields for a registration). Work alone. Don't look anything up.

## What the review includes

A **randomized trial**: people, households, or groups assigned at random, including a lottery among eligible applicants for a programme, to

- **unconditional cash**: money given without conditions on what people do (no work, schooling, health, or spending requirement), whether as recurring payments (a guaranteed or basic income) or a lump sum, possibly to a defined group (low-income adults, parents, unemployed people, people leaving homelessness),

against no cash, a token amount, or the usual benefits, in a **high-income country** (World Bank classification: for example the United States, Canada, the countries of Western and Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Singapore, Chile, Uruguay), measuring **mental health** (depression, anxiety, psychological distress, stress, well-being, life satisfaction) or **work** (employment, hours, earnings, labour force participation) among recipients.

## What it doesn't

- Conditional cash: transfers that require work, school attendance, health check-ups, or other behaviour; earnings supplements paid only to people who work; wage subsidies; welfare-to-work programmes.
- In-kind help (food, housing, vouchers restricted to some purchases, prepaid cards usable only for food), loans, savings matches, tax-credit reminders, and financial coaching alone.
- Prizes in ordinary lotteries that people chose to play (not assignment by a programme or a study).
- Trials in low- or middle-income countries.
- Studies that aren't randomized, surveys of opinions about basic income, laboratory or hypothetical-choice experiments, models and simulations, and commentaries.

## Codes for a report

- `trial_report`: it reports results, or a secondary analysis, from a trial that meets the above.
- `protocol`: a protocol, analysis plan, or design paper of such a trial, with no results.
- `review`: a systematic review or meta-analysis of such trials, or of cash transfers more broadly that might include them.
- `exclude`: anything else.

When unsure between `trial_report` and `exclude` (for example, the country isn't named), choose `trial_report`: a later step reads further.

## Codes for a registration

- `eligible`: the registered trial meets the above (randomized; unconditional cash; a high-income country, or a country not stated with nothing pointing to a low- or middle-income one; mental health or work among its outcomes, or its purpose is the effects of cash on recipients' lives).
- `exclude`: anything else.

When unsure, choose `eligible`.

## Output

A JSON array, one object per item, in the order given: `{"id": "<the item's id>", "code": "<code>", "reason": "<a few words>"}`.
