# Screening codebook

You are screening search results for a review of randomized trials of **mass azithromycin for child survival**. Decide each item from what it shows you (title and abstract for a report; the registration's fields for a registration). Work alone. Don't look anything up.

## What the review includes

A **randomized trial** (individuals, households, or communities randomized) in which **azithromycin was given to children at population scale, regardless of illness**:

- mass distribution to every child in an age band in a community (for example children 1 to 59 months, or infants 1 to 11 months), or
- community-wide distribution to all ages (for example for trachoma), or
- universal prophylaxis to every child or infant reached by a programme or a visit (for example at a vaccination visit, a child health day, or alongside seasonal malaria chemoprevention),

compared with **placebo, no treatment, delayed treatment, or another azithromycin schedule** (another age band or frequency), where the trial **measured all-cause mortality among children** (as a primary or secondary outcome, or in a secondary analysis).

## What it doesn't

- Azithromycin given only to children who are sick, hospitalized, discharged from hospital, malnourished and under treatment, or with a specific infection.
- Trials only in adults, in pregnancy or labour, or of newborns treated in hospital.
- Other antibiotics, unless a trial also has an azithromycin arm that meets the above.
- Studies that aren't randomized, models and simulations, cost studies without new mortality data, and commentaries.

## Codes for a report

- `trial_report`: it reports results from a trial that meets the above: its main results, or a secondary or subgroup analysis that reports mortality (overall, by age, by cause, by subgroup, or over time). Also a report from such a trial about something else (resistance, malaria, nutrition, coverage) if it might report mortality.
- `protocol`: a protocol, a statistical analysis plan, or a design paper of a trial that meets the above, with no results.
- `review`: a systematic review, meta-analysis, or pooled analysis of such trials.
- `exclude`: anything else, including reports from such a trial that clearly report no mortality (for example only resistance or costs).

When unsure between `trial_report` and `exclude`, choose `trial_report`: a later step reads the full text.

## Codes for a registration

- `eligible`: the registered trial meets the above (randomized; azithromycin given to children at population scale regardless of illness; mortality among children among its outcomes, or the trial's purpose is child survival).
- `exclude`: anything else.

When unsure, choose `eligible`.

## Output

A JSON array, one object per item, in the order given: `{"id": "<the item's id or NCT number>", "code": "<code>", "reason": "<a few words>"}`.
